What is a Fixator Muscle?

A fixator muscle is defined as the muscle that stabilizes the joints to enhance the efficiency of the prime mover muscle. In simpler terms, it is the muscle that supports or fixes the attachment of the agonist muscle (the muscle responsible for the movement). Fixator muscles counterbalance any unwanted movement of the bones that would compromise the primary action.

For instance, let's take the example of the bicep curl. In this exercise, the bicep muscle is the agonist muscle. As you lift the weight, your bicep contracts, and your elbow joint flexes. The fixator muscle in this case would be the muscles of your back and shoulder that actively stabilize your shoulder joint, keeping it from rolling forward as the weight lifts. If the fixator muscles were not engaged, there would be additional movement in the shoulder joint which would cause unwanted strain and tension.
